THE THIRD CONDITIONAL / CONDITIONAL TYPE 3 

 

When we are talking about the past, we use:

 

If + Past Perfect, + Perfect Conditional 

or

 Perfect Conditional + If + Past Perfect

 



Examples:



1. If you had worn your old shoes, you would have been more comfortable.



2. They would have won if they had played better.

 

I WISH / IF ONLY

 

  • We use I wish/if only + Simple Past to say that we regret something, that someting is not as we would like it to be.



1. I wish I lived in a bigger house.!  -  If only I lived in a bigger house!

  • We use  I wish/if only + had + Past Participle to say that we regret something in the past.



2. I wish I hadn't driven so fast!      -  if only I hadn't driven so fast!

  • We use  I wish/if only + would + Infinitive for actions and changes.



3. I wish  you would give up smoking. -  if only you would give up smoking.

  • In if sentences and after wish you can use were instead of was



4. I wish I were taller.                             -  if only I were taller.
