Joyce Martin is the Personnel Manager at Pharmasil, a French chemicals company that is located in the south of France. She was born in England but has been living in France for almost twenty years and she is married to a successful French businessman. She is also the mother of two lovely young children. She is very happy at work and with her job conditions because she only has to work four days a week, although her responsabilities require her to be on call at all times, that means she sometimes has to go on business trips at the weekend. She can also bring her children to work with her because Pharmasil has good childcare facilities in the same building. Obviously she doesn't see them during the day because she is so busy, except sometimes at lunchtime. But she doesn't have to work most weekends and this makes family life much easier for her and her husband who also helps a lot in looking after the children. She says: "To be accepted as a woman in a man's world is not a very easy task." And she believes she must do her job better than most of the men around her, especially as she has chosen to work part time, meaning that she has to make work previsions and decisions during her absence. Her advice to working women: "You musn't be too nice or you'll be eaten alive." "Create assurance and you'll be respected at all levels."
